IP Addresses for Websites

Every website has an IP address.

Just like 1-800-Flowers is really the phone number 1-800-333-3333, every website domain also has an underlying IP address. For example, the IP address for www.w3c.org is 128.30.52.31.

Sometimes IP addresses are shared. For example, a web server can have one IP address that is used for 100 different websites on the same machine.

The translation from domain name to IP address is done by a service called DNS.
